Automated Spot and Seam Welding Assembly System

Product: Catalytic Converter

Two machines are shown here: One is used to assemble and spot weld the components of the catalytic converter together; the second machine seam welds the two edges of the converter shell.

Advantages and Features

SPOT WELDER

  • Components are manually loaded and automatically unloaded.
  • The machine locates and presses the outer shell halves together and presses the exhaust cones into the ceramic media and then spot welds all the pieces to lock them together in their correct location.
  • This all takes place in a 30-second cycle time, producing 120 units per hour.

SEAM WELDER

  • A spot welded catalytic converter assembly is manually loaded into a clamp nest.
  • The assembly is then firmly clamped and seam welded on the two edge flanges.
  • The machine uses three (3) state-of-the-art Servo driven axis to position and profile the flanges to the seam weld wheels.
  • The seam weld heads are of an equalizing design to provide an equal and uniform weld pressure to the flanges, providing a very high quality weld.
  • The seam welder operates on a 60-second cycle. Two (2) welders are used to provide the 120 units per hour.
